Statement on Intellectual Property and Digital Stewardship
1. Our Commitment
Cantate Azania is a digital utility designed to preserve and promote the choral traditions of the South African and the broader Christian community. We are committed to respecting the intellectual property rights of authors, composers, and publishing houses.
2. Public Domain Works
A significant portion of the hymns featured in this digital platform—including many historical chorales by Martin Luther, Charles Wesley, and other classic composers—are in the Public Domain. These works are free to be used, shared, and performed under the South African Copyright Act of 1978.
3. Copyrighted Content & Fair Dealing
For hymns, translations, or arrangements that remain under copyright, Cantate Azania operates under the principles of "Fair Dealing" (Section 12 of the Copyright Act):
- Non-Commercial Use: This app is a free utility for personal study and congregational worship.
- Educational Preservation: We aim to ensure that liturgical music remains accessible to youth and rural congregations who may not have physical access to printed hymnals.
4. Third-Party Trademarks
The specific contents of official hymnals (such as Amagama Okuhlabelela or Difela Tsa Kereke) are the property of their respective church bodies or publishing houses. Cantate Azania is an independent project and is not officially affiliated with these organizations unless otherwise stated.
